What We Use in Our Methodology

To find the top financial advisors in Costa Mesa, we first identified all firms registered with the SEC in the city. Next, we filtered out firms that don't offer financial planning services, those that don't serve primarily individual clients and those that have disclosures on their record. The qualifying firms were then ranked according to the following criteria:

  • AUM
Firms with more total assets under management are ranked higher.
  • Individual Client Count
Firms who serve more individual clients (as opposed to institutional clients) are ranked higher.
  • Clients Per Advisor
Firms with a lower ratio of clients per financial advisor are ranked higher.
  • Age of Firm
Firms that have been in business longer are ranked higher.
  • Fee Structure
Firms with a fee-only (as opposed to fee-based) compensation structure are ranked higher.

All information is obtained through public records and is updated annually after the firms’ form ADV filing. This list may include firms that have a business relationship with SmartAsset, in which SmartAsset is compensated for lead referrals. Such relationships have no impact on our rankings, and firms are included and ranked based strictly on the above criteria. SmartAsset is not a client of the aforementioned firms, and did not receive compensation for including any of the firms on the aforementioned list.

Check Capital Management, Inc.

At the top of the list, Check Capital Management, Inc. serves mostly high-net-worth individuals. Businesses and other investment companies round out the firm's client base. The firm states that it has a minimum account size of $500,000, though this requirement is waivable.

Check Capital Management's team includes one certified financial planner (CFP), two chartered retirement planning counselors (CRPCs) and one chartered financial analyst (CFA). This is a fee-only firm, meaning its compensation comes from client fees - and not also from transaction-based fees that can create conflicts of interest.

Check Capital Management Background

Check Capital Management first opened its doors back in 1987, making it the second oldest firm on this list. Steven Check, the firm's founder, president and chief investment officer, runs the firm today. However, the firm is principally owned by the Check Family Trust.

The firm specializes in asset management services, but it also provides clients with general asset allocation advice and retirement income plans. Additionally, the firm acts as the investment advisor for the Blue Chip Investor Fund, a mutual fund, and publishes a monthly newsletter called The Blue Chip Investor.

Check Capital Management Investing Philosophy

Check Capital Management predominantly invests client assets in a mix of stocks, corporate bonds, municipal bonds and stock options. However, the firm will tailor its investment strategy to best fit the investment goals, risk tolerance and time horizon of each client. So when appropriate, the firm may consider other investment options.

When considering investments for clients' portfolios, Check Capital does its own fundamental research. This involves completing an in-depth analysis of a company's annual reports and presentations, along with listening to important reporting conference calls. The firm will then pool its knowledge to estimate the company's status in three to five years, then makes its decision based on this estimate.

20/20 Capital Management, Inc.

20/20 Capital Management, Inc. has many offices, including five in California. The Costa Mesa office includes one certified financial planner (CFP).

Most clients are non-high-net-worth individuals, though there are a few high-net-worth individuals and investment advisors included among their clients as well. 20/20 has no set account minimum.

The firm is fee-based, meaning that some advisors earn commissions for selling insurance products or conducting securities transactions. While this could potentially lead to a conflict of interest, the firm must abide by its fiduciary duty to always act in the best interests of its clients.

20/20 Capital Management Background

20/20 Capital Management is the youngest firm on this list, having first opened for business in 2015. The firm is employee-owned, though no single employee owns more than a quarter of the firm's shares. It’s led by CEO Samir C. Thakkar and President Arnold Henkel, who have more than 50 years of experience between them.

20/20 provides a range of services to its clients, including the following:

  • Investment management
  • Wrap fee programs
    • Destination Portfolios
    • The Managed Account Solutions Program
  • Financial planning
    • Cash flow analysis
    • Estate planning
    • Tax planning
    • Risk management
    • Investment planning
    • Retirement planning
  • Sub-advisory services
  • Selection of independent money managers

20/20 Capital Management Investing Philosophy

20/20 Capital Management typically invests client assets in a range of no-load or low-load mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). That said, the firm may invest in a range of investment products, like equities, warrants, corporate debt securities, commercial paper, certificates of deposit (CDs), municipal securities, variable life insurance, variable annuities, U.S. government securities, options contracts, partnerships, business development companies (BDCs), closed-end funds and real estate investment trusts (REITs).

When determing exactly what kinds of securities your portfolio should include, the firm will review with you your risk tolerance, time horizon, liqudity and income needs and any specific investment goals you may have. In turn, the firm will create a risk-adjusted asset allocation for you.

  3. Produce a Financial Report Card with the findings of the analysis.
  4. Create a Value Proposition Letter that lays out the costs and benefits of moving forward with asset management and financial planning with the firm.

How Long $1mm Lasts in Retirement

SmartAsset's interactive map highlights places where $1 million will last the longest in retirement. Zoom between states and the national map to see the top spots in each region. Also, scroll over any city to learn about the cost of living in retirement for that location.

Rank City Housing Expenses Food Expenses Healthcare Expenses Utilities Expenses Transportation Expenses

Methodology We analyzed data on average expenditures for seniors, cost of living and investment returns to determine how many years of retirement a $1 million nest egg would cover in cities across America.

First, we looked at data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on the average annual expenditures of seniors. We then applied cost of living data from the Council for Community and Economic Research to adjust those national average spending levels based on the costs of each expense category (housing, food, healthcare, utilities, transportation and other) in each city. Using this data, SmartAsset calculated the average cost of living for retirees in the largest U.S. cities.

We assumed the $1 million would grow at a real return (interest minus inflation) of 2%. Then, we divided $1 million by the sum of each of those annual numbers to determine how long $1 million would cover retirement expenses in each of the cities in our study. Cities where $1 million lasted the longest ranked the highest in the study.
