Oklahoma state tax quick facts
  • Income tax: 0.5% - 5.0%
  • Sales tax: 4.5% - 11%
  • Property tax: 0.89% average effective rate
  • Gas tax: 17 cents per gallon of regular gasoline, 14 cents per gallon of diesel

As of the 2017 tax year, Oklahoma’s top income tax rate is 5%. That puts Oklahoma’s top income tax rate in the bottom half of all states. The Sooner State’s property taxes are also below average, with an average effective rate of 0.89%, 23rd-lowest in the U.S.

It isn’t all good news for Oklahoma taxpayers, however. When considering both state and local sales taxes, the state has the sixth-highest sales taxes in the country with an average rate of 8.86%. Of course, that tax varies widely depending on where in the state you are, just as the income tax rates vary depending on income and other factors. Below, we’ll take a closer look at all of Oklahoma’s most important tax rules to see how you might be affected.

Oklahoma Income Tax

Similar to the federal government, Oklahoma has an income tax that applies higher rates to higher income levels. The rates range from 0.5% to a top rate of 5.0%, based on the income brackets shown below.

Those tax rates apply to Oklahoma taxable income, which includes specific types of income after all deductions and exemptions. Itemized deductions are allowed in the state of Oklahoma only for filers who itemized deductions on their federal return. Itemized deductions are identical to federal itemized deductions.

For filers who do not itemize deductions, the Oklahoma standard deduction matches the federal standard deduction. The deduction is $6,350 for single filers or married persons filing separately, $12,700 for married persons filing jointly and $9,350 for heads of household. Oklahoma also has a personal exemption of $1,000 for each filer, with additional exemptions available for each dependent listed by the filer. Consider hiring a professional accountant or looking into tax preparation software like TaxSlayer and Credit Karma to help file your taxes.

Oklahoma Sales Tax

The state sales tax rate in Oklahoma is 4.5%. Alone, that would be the 13th-lowest rate in the country. However, in addition to that rate, Oklahoma has some of the highest local sales taxes in the country, with combined city and county rates as high as 6.5%. The table below shows total state and local sales tax rates for every county in Oklahoma, as well as the 100 largest cities. In cities that are subject to both city and county rates, both are included in the local number.

Most goods and services in Oklahoma are subject to these rates. Among the types of services you can expect to pay sales tax on are telecommunications, hotel rooms, advertising, health club dues, admissions tickets (to sporting events or movies, for example) and printing services.

Oklahoma is one of just a handful of states that levies sales taxes on all kinds of food. The full state and local rate applies to groceries, as well as prepared food. Low income taxpayers can offset this tax by claiming the Grocery Tax Credit on their income tax return. The credit is equal to $40 per household member.

Oklahoma taxes clothing purchases, but has a sales tax holiday where clothing and shoe purchases under $100 are exempt from sales tax for one weekend. The sales tax holiday is usually the first weekend of August, to align with back-to-school shopping.

Oklahoma Property Tax

The average Oklahoman homeowner pays just $1,076 per year in property taxes. That places Oklahoma among the ten states with the lowest property taxes. However, it’s important to keep in mind that home values are also below average in the Sooner State. The effective property tax rate - taxes as a percentage of value - is 0.89%, the 23rd-lowest overall. At the county level, the rate ranges from 0.42% in Choctaw County to 1.12% in Cleveland County.

For more information on settling down in the Sooner State, take a look at our Oklahoma mortgage guide.

Oklahoma Gas Tax

According to the American Petroleum Institute, the state gas tax in Oklahoma is 17 cents per gallon of regular gasoline and 14 cents per gallon of diesel. Those are both the second-lowest rates in the country.

Oklahoma Cigarette Tax

A pack of cigarettes in Oklahoma is subject to state taxes totaling $1.03, the 17th-lowest rate in the U.S.

Oklahoma Alcohol Tax

There are a variety of excise taxes on alcoholic beverages in Oklahoma. For most types of beer, these will total 40 cents per gallon, while liquor (with 40% alcohol by volume) will be taxed at a rate of $5.56 per gallon.

  • Much of Oklahoma lies in Tornado Alley, a section of the middle United States that is especially prone to strong storms. The state sees an average of 55 tornadoes per year.
  • The only extended population decline in Oklahoma’s history occurred during the Dust Bowl, a spate of severe droughts and dust storms that struck the area during the 1930s.

Rank County Income Tax Sales Tax Property Tax Fuel Tax

Methodology

Where you live can have a big impact on both which types of taxes you have to pay each year and how much money you spend on them. SmartAsset calculated the amount of money a specific person would pay in income, sales, property and fuel taxes in each county in the country and ranked the lowest to highest tax burden.

To better compare income tax burdens across counties, we used the national median household income. We then applied relevant deductions and exemptions before calculating federal, state and local income taxes.

In order to determine sales tax burden we estimated that 35% of take-home (after-tax) pay is spent on taxable goods. We multiplied the average sales tax rate for a county by the household income less income tax. This product is then multiplied by 35% to estimate the sales tax paid.

For property taxes, we compared the median property taxes paid in each county.

For fuel taxes, we first distributed statewide vehicle miles traveled down to the county level using the number of vehicles in each county. We then calculated the total number of licensed drivers within each county. The countywide miles were then distributed amongst the licensed drivers in the county, which gave us the miles driven per licensed driver. Using the nationwide average fuel economy, we calculated the average gallons of gas used per driver in each county and multiplied that by the fuel tax.

We then added the dollar amount for income, sales, property and fuel taxes to rank the counties to calculate a total tax burden.
