What We Use in Our Methodology

To find the top financial advisors in Wyoming, we first identified all firms registered with the SEC in the state. Next, we filtered out firms that don't offer financial planning services, those that don't serve primarily individual clients and those that have disclosures on their record. The qualifying firms were then ranked according to the following criteria:

  • AUM
Firms with more total assets under management are ranked higher.
  • Individual Client Count
Firms who serve more individual clients (as opposed to institutional clients) are ranked higher.
  • Clients Per Advisor
Firms with a lower ratio of clients per financial advisor are ranked higher.
  • Age of Firm
Firms that have been in business longer are ranked higher.
  • Fee Structure
Firms with a fee-only (as opposed to fee-based) compensation structure are ranked higher.

All information is obtained through public records and is updated annually after the firms’ form ADV filing. This list may include firms that have a business relationship with SmartAsset, in which SmartAsset is compensated for lead referrals. Such relationships have no impact on our rankings, and firms are included and ranked based strictly on the above criteria. SmartAsset is not a client of the aforementioned firms, and did not receive compensation for including any of the firms on the aforementioned list.

Frontier Asset Management

Frontier Asset Management is a fee-only firm that manages assets on behalf of retail investors, high-net-worth individuals, trusts, charitable organizations, endowments, retirement plans and other individual and institutional investors. Services include financial planning, portfolio management and educational initiatives.

Frontier Asset Management Background

Sheridan-based Frontier was founded in 2000 by Gary Miller, CFA, and its current CEO is Rob Miller, also a CFA. Since then it has grown, with 15 advisors, many of whom are CFAs and CFPs, to become the largest financial advisory firm in Wyoming.

Frontier Asset Management Investing Strategy

The firm, which serves as a fiduciary to its advisory clients, employs a proprietary two-step process in developing investment strategies.

First, Frontier uses what it calls Dynamic Downside Focus to seek to reduce downside risk and give advisors – and investors – the confidence to pursue their investment goals. It establishes downside risk targets for its strategies, representing the expected one-year loss potential at a 95% confidence level. Then, it draws from forward-looking risk, return and correlation expectations of more than 16 diverse asset classes to build each strategy’s target asset allocation.

Second, the firm uses what it calls FundFusion to research and identify the best fund managers, as well as a proprietary technology to find the optimal mix of funds.

Grupp Financial

Grupp Financial is a 10-year-old fee-based firm that has no account balance minimums, making it largely accessible for most clients. It focuses on estate and tax planning and strategies, fiduciary services to support trusts and philanthropic planning and management.

Grupp Financial Background

In 1997 Matthew Peter Grupp started his career as a tax attorney in the Los Angeles and then San Francisco offices of Deloitte with a focus on mergers and acquisitions for private equity and Fortune 100 clients. In 2005 Matthew established a trust and estate practice in Idaho. In May 2012 he formed Grupp Financial, which he owns 100% through Grupp Organization LLC.

Grupp Financial Investing Strategies

The firm's investing strategies are based on fundamental and "top-down" analyses. The former concentrates on factors that determine a company’s value and expected earnings; the latter concentrates on marginal rates of change of growth and inflation and overlays how central bankers are likely to respond to the implied changes in economic conditions. Grupp also engages in quantitative market and cyclical analysis. The firm uses short- and long-term trading approaches as well as short selling. In addition, Grupp also engages in margin and securities-back trading.

Integrity Financial Corporation

Integrity Financial is a registered investment advisor that focuses on financial planning, asset management, retirement plan consulting and investment advice to individuals, high-net-worth individuals, business owners and corporate pension and profit-sharing plans. Other specialties include wealth management, business financial planning and legacy planning. Integrity has no account minimums for clients.

Integrity Financial Background

Kristofer R. Gray is the principal and 100% owner of the firm, which was formed in 2004. It employs 18 advisors to work with clients and help them create financial, estate, retirement and legacy plans.

Integrity Financial Investing Strategy

Integrity employs strategic concepts of modern portfolio theory, asset allocation and diversification. The firm also uses alternative investments, such as hedge funds and private equity/venture capital funds, though it warns that such securities are speculative and involve a high degree of risk. Other areas that the firm may invest in are real estate products, including Delaware Statutory Trusts.

Harfst and Associates

Harfst and Associates is a Sheridan-based financial advisor firm that works primarily with individual clients. Most of these individuals have less than a high net worth. Other clients of Harfst include businesses, retirement plans and charities.

Generally speaking, there is a $500,000 minimum investment requirement for new clients of Harfst. However, the firm may be willing to waive these requirements under certain circumstances.

Some of the advisors at this firm can sell insurance products on a commission basis. While this presents a potential conflict of interest, the firm’s fiduciary duty means it must act in clients’ best interests no matter what.

Harfst and Associates Background

Harfst and Associates was founded back in 2007. The firm is under the ownership of Robby Harfst, a certified financial planner (CFP), and Danette Harfst. Danette Harfst acts as the firm’s chief operating officer (COO), while Robby Harfst acts as president.

Investment management services at this firm are customized to each client’s needs. Financial planning services are also personalized.

Harfst and Associates Investing Strategy

When building an investment portfolio for a client, Harfst and Associates will account for their financial situation and needs. This involves working with the client to identify important characteristics like their time horizon, risk tolerance, income needs, financial goals and more. Once these factors are clear, the firm can begin to build a set of investments that helps them reach those goals.

There are a handful of trading and investment strategies Harfst may use. These include short sales, option writing, margin transactions, short-term purchases (held for less than a year), long-term purchases (held for more than a year) and inverse funds.

Traction Financial Partners

Traction Financial Partners, which is based in Encampment, Wyoming, is a fee-based firm that primarily serves individual clients. Most of these clients come in below the high-net-worth threshold. The rest of the firm's clients include businesses and high-net-worth individuals. Traction Financial employs one certified financial planner (CFP).

This firm has a range of minimum balances, depending on the account type. However, under the right circumstances, the Traction Financial may be willing to waive this stipulation.

Certain on-staff advisors at this firm can sell insurance products for a commission. While this represents a potential conflict of interest, the firm’s fiduciary duty means it must act in your best interest.

Traction Financial Partners Background

Traction Financial Partners has been registered with the SEC since 2021. It is under the ownership of Robert Heykoop and Evan Barnes. Heykoop is the firm’s president and CEO, and Barnes is its executive vice president.

Traction offers services specifically built for individuals and businesses. Investment management is customized to your needs, and financial planning can cover risk management, retirement planning, estate planning, tax planning and more.

Traction Financial Partners Investing Strategy

When you become a client of Traction Financial Partners, you’ll sit down with your advisor and discuss the specifics of your financial situation. This involves your risk tolerance, time horizon, income needs and long-term goals. Based on these circumstances and your hopes for the future, a portfolio and corresponding asset allocation will be built for you.

According to the firm, it typically invests client assets in some combination of ETFs, mutual funds and individual equities. The percentage of your portfolio each will take up depends on your needs and situation.

Markle Financial

Markle Financial is up next on our list of the top financial advisor firms in Wyoming. This Laramie-based company works almost solely with individuals, with most of them not having a high net worth. Other clients of Markle include high-net-worth individuals and retirement plans. There is no minimum investment requirements for new clients.

This is a fee-based firm. That means that some on-staff advisors can receive commissions from the sale of certain insurance products, like annuities, to clients. The receipt of these commissions could present a potential conflict of interest, though the firm still has a fiduciary duty to act in clients' best interests at all times.

The team of advisors at Markle includes one chartered retirement planning counselor (CRPC).

Markle Financial Background

Markle Financial is a fairly young firm, as it was originally opened in just 2015. It wasn't until 2019 that the firm registered with the SEC, though. The firm is currently owned by founder and president Shannon Markle. Beyond its headquarters, Markle Financial runs a secondary office in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

More than anything else, Markle Financial identifies itself as a wealth management firm. This means it not only focuses on investing or financial plans, but both of these services together. Specific offerings include investment management, education fund planning, retirement planning, estate planning, risk management, charitable gift planning, tax planning and Social Security maximization.

Markle Financial Investment Strategy

Markle Financial tailors its client portfolios to the needs and and goals of the individual. This means your portfolio's asset allocation will be built on a foundation of your risk tolerance, time horizon, income needs and more. Investments the firm typically makes include mutual funds, real estate investment trusts (REITs), annuities, ETFs, bonds, stocks, venture capital funds and more.

Beyond the customization of clients' portfolios, there are two other main factors in Markle's management: tax management and flexibility. The former involves minimizing the amount of taxes that are taken from your investments over time, while the latter revolves around the continuous review of investments to ensure that the best decisions are always being employed.

R.W. Baker Wealth Management Group

R.W. Baker Wealth Management Group is an individual-centric financial advisor firm, though it also works with businesses and charities. The firm manages the assets of mostly non-high-net-worth individuals, though it also works with some high-net-worth individuals. R.W. Baker has a $50,000 minimum investment requirement, though it may waive this under certain circumstances.

Members of the advisory staff at this firm can earn commissions from the sale of insurance and securities. While this presents a potential conflict of interest, the firm’s fiduciary duty requires it to act in clients’ best interests.

R.W. Baker Wealth Management Group Background

Founded in 1983, fee-based R.W. Baker Wealth Management Group is owned by Rosalyn Wallach Baker. Baker has decades of experience in the financial services industry.

Many of the services at this firm revolve around investing and the management of your portfolio. The firm also provides financial planning, though.

R.W. Baker Wealth Management Group Investing Strategy

The core of R.W. Baker Wealth Management Group’s investing philosophy revolves around creating tax-conscious, diversified investment portfolios for clients. These portfolios are also suited to your specific needs, such as your risk tolerance, time horizon, income needs and financial goals.

Generally speaking, the firm prefers to manage money over the long term. This involves minimizing trading costs and holding investments typically for a year or longer.

Cypress Capital Management

Sheridan-based Cypress Capital Management takes the second spot on our list. This firm is far smaller than first-place Harfst and Associates, but its clients-per-advisor ratio is significantly better. The firm's client base is dominated by non-high-net-worth individuals, though it also maintains relationships with other types of clients. These include high-net-worth individuals, charities, retirement plans, funds and small businesses.

There is no minimum investment necessary to become a client of Cypress Capital Management. The firm is also fee-only, which means it does not earn commissions beyond the normal fees paid by clients. Although the advisory team at this firm does not hold designations such as certified financial planner (CFP), team members hold several FINRA Series licenses.

Cypress Capital Management Background

Cypress Capital Management was established back in 2004 by Matthew Ebzery, who still works at the firm. Today, Ebzery holds the title of chief investment officer (CIO). Together, Ebzery and lead investment advisor Kristin Herbst own Cypress Capital Management entirely. The duo has over 20 years of investment consulting experience between them.

This firm specializes in forming and managing investment portfolios for its client base. It also provides financial planning services, though its website and Form ADV do not elaborate on these offerings.

Cypress Capital Management Investment Strategy

What appears to separate Cypress Capital Management's investment strategy from the competition is its in-depth investment selection process. This takes into account things like sales growth, operating margin growth, earning surprises, analyst earnings revisions, cash flow, earnings momentum, earnings growth and return on equity. Based on information from the firm's website, it runs through these metrics for around 5,000 companies, and its findings inform the make-up of its clients' portfolios.

As you might expect from the above, many of Cypress Capital's investment are in various types of stocks. In this realm, it generally focuses on small-cap stocks, mid-cap stocks, large-cap stocks and preferred stocks. Other potential investments include exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and closed-end funds.

O'Donnell Wealth Management

O'Donnell Wealth Management is a fee-based registered investment advisor that manages assets for a fairly small client base. The firm offers financial planning and portfolio management services as part of its wrap fee approach. The firm, which employs three advisors, requires clients to have a minimum $500,000 to open an account.

O'Donnell Wealth Management Background

Stephen P. O'Donnell founded the firm in 2022 and serves as both its CEO and chief investment officer (CIO). In 2023 Wyoming's secretary of state appointed O'Donnell to a three-year term on the state's Investment Funds Committee Selection Panel. The panel helps manage the state's approximately multi-billion dollar investment portfolio.

O'Donnell Wealth Management Investing Strategies

O'Donnell says that capital preservation is more important than "chasing exorbitant returns." Beyond that priority, the firm aims to produce attractive, risk-adjusted returns. To achieve these objectives, the firm pursues a growth and income style of investing with risk levels of conservative to moderate. O'Donnell offers its growth and income portfolios in "standard" and conservative versions. It conducts fundamental and technical analysis and favors large-cap U.S. and foreign corporations.

How Long $1mm Lasts in Retirement

SmartAsset's interactive map highlights places where $1 million will last the longest in retirement. Zoom between states and the national map to see the top spots in each region. Also, scroll over any city to learn about the cost of living in retirement for that location.

Least
Most
Rank City Housing Expenses Food Expenses Healthcare Expenses Utilities Expenses Transportation Expenses

Methodology We analyzed data on average expenditures for seniors, cost of living and investment returns to determine how many years of retirement a $1 million nest egg would cover in cities across America.

First, we looked at data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on the average annual expenditures of seniors. We then applied cost of living data from the Council for Community and Economic Research to adjust those national average spending levels based on the costs of each expense category (housing, food, healthcare, utilities, transportation and other) in each city. Using this data, SmartAsset calculated the average cost of living for retirees in the largest U.S. cities.

We assumed the $1 million would grow at a real return (interest minus inflation) of 2%. Then, we divided $1 million by the sum of each of those annual numbers to determine how long $1 million would cover retirement expenses in each of the cities in our study. Cities where $1 million lasted the longest ranked the highest in the study.
