Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard®

A Travel Card With a High Rewards Rate

If you’re looking for a travel credit card and you have a good to excellent credit score, the Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® is worth your notice. It combines a high bonus with a high rewards rate. If that weren’t enough, it also offers an introductory 0% APR for the first 12 billing cycles that you’re an accountholder.

The Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® has a rewards rate that rivals that of other cards on the market. You’ll earn 2x miles on every purchase you make with the card, not just travel purchases. On top of that, you’ll get 5% miles back every time you redeem your rewards. However, the minimum required to redeem for travel starts at 10,000 miles ($100) and the minimum redemption for cash back statement credit or gift cards starts at 5,000 miles ($25). If redeeming for merchandise, values will vary based on what you are redeeming for.

If you spend $5,000 on card purchases in your first 90 days as a cardholder and pay your annual fee, you’ll receive a bonus of 60,000 miles. That translates into a $600 statement credit on travel purchases, and is a very solid bonus.

If you need to enact a balance transfer to help you pay down debt from other credit cards, the Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® has a special perk for you. Any balances you transfer to the card will benefit from a 0% introductory APR for the first 12 billing cycles after you open your account. That special rate only applies to balances transferred within 45 days of account opening.

The purchase APR on the Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® is a variable rate of 17.74%, 21.74% or 24.74% Variable, depending on your creditworthiness. After the first 12 billing cycles at a 0% APR, any balances you’ve transferred will also be subject to a APR of 17.74%, 21.74% or 24.74% Variable, depending on your credit score.

Smart Features

2x miles on every purchase – The Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® goes above and beyond by offering unlimited 2x miles on all purchases.

No penalty APR – If you miss a payment on your Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard®, you won’t be bumped up to a penalty APR like you would with some other cards.

60,000 mile bonus  – The Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® offers a bonus of 60,000 miles to customers who spend $5,000 in their first 90 days after account opening and pay their annual fee.

5% miles redemption bonus – Every time you redeem your miles, you’ll get 5% miles back to put toward your next redemption.

  • Smart Tip: Keep an eye on the miles you’re accruing so you’ll know when you hit the minimum redemption threshold. That way, you can time your redemption to coincide with major purchases.

Who It Benefits

The Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® is particularly beneficial to frequent travelers who spend in a wide range of categories and don’t mind paying an annual fee of $89. Other cards with high rewards rates tend to offer their highest rates in only a couple of categories, such as dining and travel. The Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® applies its 2x miles rate to all purchases, so is a boon for those whose spending is spread across different categories.

If you need to enact a balance transfer to pay down debt, you also stand to benefit from the Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® 0% introductory APR on transferred balances made within the first 45 days. That 0% APR lasts for 12 billing cycles, giving you a year to pay down old debt without accruing new interest on it.

How It Works

The Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® is a pretty straightforward card. When you swipe your card you’ll get 2x miles for each dollar you spend. That rate applies to all purchases, not just travel.

If you spend $5,000 in the first 90 days after you open your card account and pay the annual fee, you’ll get 60,000 bonus miles. That’s enough to redeem for travel statement credit worth $600.

Your APR on your Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® will be a APR of 17.74%, 21.74% or 24.74% Variable, depending on your creditworthiness. Balance transfers will be subject to 0% APR for 12 billing cycles, as long as you transfer the balances within 45 days of opening your account. After those 12 billing cycles any remaining balances will be subject to a APR of 17.74%, 21.74% or 24.74% Variable, depending on your creditworthiness. There is a balance transfer fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater.

Cash advances with your Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® are subject to a 26.99% Variable APR. There is a cash advance fee of either $10 or 5% of the amount of each cash advance, whichever is greater. There is no penalty APR but there is a late payment fee of up to $37. The card has no foreign transaction fee.

What’s the Catch

Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® is a solid travel card that can stand toe-to-toe with similar cards on the market. But is there a catch? Depending on what you are redeeming for (Travel, Cash back, Gift Cards, Merchandise) there are different minimums required to redeem making the Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® a less flexible option than cards that let you redeem your rewards in any amount. And for some, the $89 annual fee will be a catch.

Just the Math Please

Rewards

Every dollar in purchases you make on your Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® will earn you two miles. Redeeming your rewards will earn you a 5% bonus, applied to your next redemption. If you spend $5,000 in your first 90 days as an accountholder and pay the annual fee you’ll get a bonus of 60,000 miles, even for a $600 travel statement credit.

Balance Transfers

If you transfer balances to the Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® within your first 45 days as an accountholder, you will pay zero interest on those balances for the first 12 billing cycles after the transfer. That’s right – the card comes with an introductory 0% APR that lasts for a year. There is a balance transfer fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater. Once the 12-billing cycle introductory 0% APR offer ends your transferred balances will be subject to a APR of 17.74%, 21.74% or 24.74% Variable, depending on your credit score.

How It Stacks Up

How does the Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® compare to competitor cards? The short answer is: favorably. When you factor in the card’s 5% redemption bonus, the card’s rewards rate is over 2% on all purchases. That’s one of the highest rewards rates on the market. Especially significant is the fact that the Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® offers the same rewards rate on all spending, not just travel and dining.

Perhaps the closest competitors to the Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® are travel rewards cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. However, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offers its highest rewards rate (2x points per dollar) only on restaurant and travel spending. All other spending gets you 1x point per dollar.

Bottom Line

If you have good to excellent credit, don’t mind paying an annual fee and want a high rewards rate on your spending, the Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® will help you earn “free” money to put toward your travel expenses.  The card’s high rewards rate and generous bonus makes it a top contender in its category.
